August 19, 1839 the French government purchased the patent for the Daguerreotype process from Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. This is the invention that made photography possible. Rather than keep it just for the French people, the government gifted it to the world in order that all people, no matter where they lived, would have access to photography. This selfless gift of technology to the world is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the patent acquisition as World Photography Day.
